Expeditions and Guided Dives for 2010/2011

Exploration of WWI and WWII casualties off the island of Malta: May 21 - 26, 2011

Six Nights plus Five Days of Diving for 745 Euros

Malta subI would like you to join me for a very special Technical Wreck Diving expedition   to the warm, clear water off the island of Malta in the Mediterranean next spring.  This trip has been on the cards for a while and I am finally satisfied with the   set-up "in -country" and the dive sites on offer. If you are interested in seeing  great wrecks in very comfortable conditions, consider this trip.  Due to the depth of these spectacular dive sites, trimix certification and experience  is a must. I can offer Advanced Trimix training on the trip but to take part in   this expedition, you must have standard trimix certification before arriving. Contact  me if you have doubts.

Our final destination each day will be weather dependent but here are some of the sites on the agenda:

HMS Stubborn -  S Class WWII Submarine. 56 metres deep. Scuttled after descending past crush depth to avoid depth charges.

Le Polynesien (ranked among top five wrecks in the world) - WWI 152 metre long passenger liner being used to carry cargo. On the 10th August 1918 she was hit by a Torpedo from the U Boot UC22 and sank 7 miles outside the entrance of Valletta Grand Harbour - Malta, 10 people lost their lives. It lies at a depth of 60 metres. This wreck is in two halves so two dives.

HMS Southwold - WWII Destroyer mined, lies in maximum of 75 metres. This wreck is in two halves like the Poly

Schnellboot - A German WWII Torpedo boat. Mined in 1942. Maximum depth around 65 metres.

Cargo Boat - Lies in 115 metres. We know NOTHING about her, not even her name.

HMS Russell - Battleship. Lies in 115 metres.

We also can dive: The Imperial Eagle, Three wrecks on Gozo Island, The P-29 and Rosie Tug and the Um El Faroud Tanker. All were purpose sunk, can be done from shore and lie in no more than 42 metres. All are penetrable and good fun for when you want to take your brain out and just dive.

The Fine Print
Malta dive siteYour cost for this spectacular wreck diving trip includes six nights at a three-star  hotel and resort located in the heart of St.  Julians, and five days of technical diving. Cost includes rental of twin cylinders  (doubles) or dil and oxygen CCR bottles.  Gas and rental of stages / bailout bottles will be extra, but these costs are very  reasonable. A typical fill of 16/45 trimix in 12 litre doubles is 36 Euros, a fill  of EAN50 in an 11 litre stage is 5 Euros.
Air Malta flies into the island from London. There are direct flights from North   America but breaking the trip with a stop in London is considerably less expensive.  Air Malta from London to the international airport (about 15 minutes from the hotel)  is about 60 pounds each way. If you are interested in meeting up in London for a   day of sightseeing and then flying on to Malta, that option is open.

Quoted cost works out to approximately $900 US at time of this email.

Currency fluctuations  may result in slight changes to overall price.

 About Malta and Logistics
Malta is actually a group of three islands sitting in the middle of the  Mediterranean. Malta is the largest island and is the "big" island for tourism and  the cultural,  commercial and administrative center. It is a little less than 100 km south of Sicily  and about 290 km north of  Africa.  The weather is sunny, the beaches wide and there is a ton of top-side stuff to fill  up our surface intervals. For any history buffs, Malta boasts 7,000 years  of intrigue, including prehistoric temples and grand palaces as well as the world  famous Hypogeum (a UNESCO World Heritage Site).  The island is a favorite with Brit holiday makers, so language is not an issue.

I  expect this trip to fill up fast. All reservations are to be in no later than October 21, 2010. If you have  questions please email me and I will reply promptly.  We hope you can join us.
